The Process of the Anointing of the Holy

Uncategorized

Spirit
From a Biblical perspective the anointing is a process. The process is as follows:
Anoint: The marking and setting apart of someone for a particular service.

Anointed: The result of being marked and set apart for service.

Anointing: Encompasses the entire process. It is an all-inclusive word that covers everything from “to anoint” to the resulting effect which is to be “anointed”. It also covers the operation and special endowments of the Holy Spirit that accompany those who are anointed.

Anointing in the Old Covenant
In the Old Covenant – Anointing was always connected with the oil that was used to anoint. So, in the Old Covenant, the anointing referred to being anointed with oil and the resulting endowments and power which accompanied that.

Anointing in the New Covenant
In the New Covenant – We are not anointed with oil. We are anointed with the Holy Spirit, and the One who anoints us, is Jesus Christ Himself.

1 John 2:20

20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, … NASB
The Holy One, that we have an anointing from, is Jesus. He is the One referred to as the “Holy One” in the Word of God. To see where Jesus is referred to as the Holy One in... Read More

The Anointing Defined

Uncategorized

The word translated anointing in the Old Testament is Mashah, which simply means to smear. In the Bible we see that this was accomplished by the act of either rubbing or pouring the anointing oil upon the object or person being anointed. The Anointing was the result of being smeared with oil.

The word translated anointing in the New Testament is Chrio, which is always a symbolic smearing, not an actual smearing with oil as in the Old Covenant. This is because in the New Covenant we are anointed with the Holy Spirit, not with oil. Again, just as in the Old Covenant, the Anointing is the result of being anointed.

It is extremely important to understand that there are a few substantial differences in how the anointing operates in the New Covenant compared to how it operated in the Old Covenant. One of the biggest differences is that in the Old Covenant, one was anointed with oil, a type of the Holy Spirit, whereas in the New Covenant, one is anointed with the Holy Spirit. There are no more types and shadows in the New Covenant. The other big difference is that in the Old Covenant only a select... Read More

Understanding the Anointing

Uncategorized

In these modern times, much of how the anointing is understood and applied by the church has little if any biblical roots to draw from. Today, when many in the church speak about the anointing, or believe they are experiencing the anointing, what they are really referring to is the operation of the Holy Spirit. The first truth we must accept if we are to understand the anointing is this: the anointing is not a power; it is the process through which the Holy Spirit operates through mortal man. Therefore, the ability to distinguish between the operation of the Holy Spirit and the purpose of the anointing is paramount to understanding how to function effectively within the anointing.

Today, it is quite common to hear such phrases as, “more anointing,” “fresh anointing,” “feel the anointing,” “double portion of the anointing,” “anointing fall on me.” These sayings may sound nice, but they cannot be traced to the Bible. The truth is, you can search the Bible from cover to cover and you will never find the anointing referred to in any of the ways I just mentioned.

Yet these statements, and many more just like them, have become accepted doctrine within the... Read More

The Anointing Defined Part 2

Uncategorized

There were two different words used in the New Testament that were both translated as anointing. The first, Chrio, was always limited in its use to the sacred and symbolical anointings which refer to the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The other word translated anointing in the New Testament, is Aleipho, which simply means to smear with oil or ointment. This word for anointing was always used when referring to the cultural practice of anointing.

The cultural practice of anointing was quite common back in Biblical times. Anointing the face or body with oil was a widespread practice among ancient middle eastern cultures. People would regularly smear oil on their bodies and faces to protect the skin from the harsh elements of the climate. They referred to this practice as anointing themselves. The act of anointing people was also observed when someone wanted to honor an important guest or to prepare a body for burial.

There is a very real difference between the cultural practice of anointing, and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Not understanding this can, and often does, lead to confusion. The cultural practice of anointing is mentioned frequently throughout the Old and New Testaments. You can see... Read More

2-The Biblical Concept of the Anointing

Uncategorized

Though the anointing has unfortunately been misunderstood and misquoted in much of the church these days, the early church understood it very well. Somewhere back in time some well-intentioned minister, or ministers, failed to understand that there is a distinction between the anointing and the operation of the Holy Spirit. Not having a clear understanding of the Biblical application of this powerful process the modern church somehow managed to redefine the entire concept of the anointing. As a result, a whole new way of comprehending the anointing found its way through the church. Over time this school of thought caught on and it eventually became accepted doctrine.

This lack of understanding produced beliefs and practices which are not found anywhere in the Bible. Remember this; God is obligated to His word, not to our doctrines. If we want to experience the anointing in our lives, we need to understand it the way God intended.

For instance, throughout the entire Book of Acts, the church always credits the operating of miracles to the Holy Spirit, not the anointing. Whereas in the modern-day church, many give credit to the anointing and not the Holy Spirit. Even though the anointing contains the operation of the... Read More
