Understanding the Anointing

In these modern times, much of how the anointing is understood and applied by the church has little if any biblical roots to draw from. Today, when many in the church speak about the anointing, or believe they are experiencing the anointing, what they are really referring to is the operation of the Holy Spirit. The first truth we must accept if we are to understand the anointing is this: the anointing is not a power; it is the process through which the Holy Spirit operates through mortal man. Therefore, the ability to distinguish between the operation of the Holy Spirit and the purpose of the anointing is paramount to understanding how to function effectively within the anointing.

Today, it is quite common to hear such phrases as, “more anointing,” “fresh anointing,” “feel the anointing,” “double portion of the anointing,” “anointing fall on me.” These sayings may sound nice, but they cannot be traced to the Bible. The truth is, you can search the Bible from cover to cover and you will never find the anointing referred to in any of the ways I just mentioned.

Yet these statements, and many more just like them, have become accepted doctrine within the modern-day church. You may be interested to know that no one in the Bible, not even in the Book of Acts, referred to the anointing the way many in the church do today. Check out the book Marked by the Anointing to see what the scriptures actually do say about the anointing and compare that to what has become the current accepted doctrine in the church today.

There are significant truths we need to know about the anointing if we are going to operate in it according to God’s will. For instance, the Bible only declares that you either are, or are not, anointed. The Word of God says nothing about you being more or less anointed. Therefore, a double portion of the anointing has no Biblical relevance. And since the anointing never gets stale, it never needs to be made fresh again, so there is no need for a fresh anointing. Also, there is not one single account in the entire Word of God where anyone ever said they felt the anointing, though it is filled with accounts of people operating in it. And you can read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and not find one account where the anointing ever fell on anyone, yet it is filled with examples of the Holy Spirit falling on the anointed. And since the anointing is permanent, you cannot find one Biblical account of it ever lifting off anyone as if it comes and goes.

Since the Holy Spirit will only operate through an anointed vessel, and the anointing is the process by which the Lord will destroy the works of the devil through His church, you need to understand the anointing .
